Apple to launch iPhone journaling app

What happened: Apple is furthering its efforts in the digital mental health space with the upcoming launch of an iPhone journaling app, the WSJ reports.

Details: The app, codenamed “Jurassic,” will let users log their thoughts and activities over the day. It would track and analyze their behaviors and use that data to suggest topics for them to write about. Apple is expected to announce the app as early as June and launch it to the public with iOS 17 in September.

What the numbers say: Precedence Research expects the global market for mental health apps to grow from $4.4B in 2021 to $19.6B by 2030. Meanwhile, a study found that goal-setting/habits and journaling were among the top five features offered by nearly 600 of the top mental health apps.

Privacy challenges: When compared to other journaling apps, Apple's Jurassic will have broader access to user data such as phone calls and texts, according to the WSJ. However, Apple is expected to make privacy a central feature, with all data stored on the device. The journaling suggestions would reportedly be erased after four weeks.

Brands that should care: Apple's app will come pre-loaded on all iPhones that have the latest OS. It will compete with Day One and other third-party journaling apps, which are on the rise as more people turn to technology to track their long-term goals and physical and mental health.
