Asian spirits experiencing sales growth

Master of Malt's latest insights report shows that Asian spirits are experiencing significant growth in sales.

Japanese whisky sales increased by 6.4% between 2020 and 2022, while shōchū sales rose by 28%.

  • The report attributes part of shōchū's growth to producers outside Japan making it.
  • Chinese baijiu sales increased by 91.5% in the last six months, potentially due to bartenders using it for cocktails.
  • Indian gin sales rose 134% between 2021 and 2022, bucking the trend of the broader gin category, which plateaued.
  • Taiwanese whisky sales increased by 28% between 2021 and 2022.
  • Thai spirits and Chinese liqueurs also grew, with sales increasing by 108% and 41%, respectively.
  • South Korean spirits are another category to watch, as the country just introduced its first single malt whisky.
