Canada's privacy commissioner has opened an investigation into OpenAI over the alleged harnessing and use of people's personal information without their consent.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said it launched the
probe after an unidentified person filed a complaint against the ChatGPT
developer.
- The office didn't provide specific details, citing the active investigation.
- In
a statement, Head Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said his
office has prioritized "AI technology and its effects on privacy."
- He
said it needs to "keep up with – and stay ahead of – fast-moving
technological advances and that is one of my key focus areas as
commissioner."
- The office did not say it's imposing any restrictions or barring users in Canada from accessing ChatGPT.
- Meanwhile, ChatGPT has been disabled for users in Italy following an order from Italy's data protection agency late last month.
- The Italian agency said OpenAI is gearing up to present measures that could address its concerns and potentially lift the temporary ban.
