Cross-border e-commerce

What the numbers say: The majority (50.4%) of supply chain professionals surveyed in early 2023 believed cross-border e-commerce was difficult. A large minority (38.5%) believed cross-border e-commerce was "quite easy," while small minorities said that it was either "very difficult" or "very easy."

Relevance: E-commerce is becoming mainstream worldwide as the infrastructure for facilitating it becomes cheaper and easier to manage. E-commerce constituted 19.3% of all retail sales in 2022. However, e-commerce operations within countries are not identical to those that take place between them. A high level of difficulty in managing cross-border e-commerce creates a significant market opportunity for firms that could sell easier solutions. However, such difficulty also acts as a barrier to the expansion of e-commerce in the domain of international trade.

Brands that should care: E-commerce platforms and firms focused on international trade logistics may benefit from developing products that target and simplify cross-border e-commerce.
