Elon Musk is reportedly assembling a team of AI experts to launch an AI startup that would compete against OpenAI, the research organization he helped co-found years ago, according to a report by The Financial Times.
Musk is said to be in talks with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla about funding the AI venture, sources told the Times.
Musk has been recruiting employees from Alphabet and elsewhere for his own AI startup, the source said.
- The billionaire was a major financial backer and co-founder of OpenAI when it began as a non-profit in 2015.
- He severed ties shortly before OpenAI added its for-profit business segment in 2019.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Musk had acquired thousands of Nvidia GPUs, which are used in the creation of large language models.
- He told the BBC that he was securing the processors for his companies.
- "It seems like everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point," Musk said. "Twitter and Tesla are certainly buying GPUs."
