First woman to direct Star Wars

 

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a Pakistan-born director, will be the first woman and person of color to direct a Star Wars film. 

 Three new Star Wars movies are planned, with the first set to release in 2025.

  • Obaid-Chinoy will direct a film set 15 years after the last movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley returning as the lead.
  • The film will follow Rey's attempt to revive the Jedi order.
  • Obaid-Chinoy said she was "drawn to the hero's journey" in the Star Wars universe.
  • The three films will cover different periods in the Star Wars narrative and have other directors.

  • Obaid-Chinoy has won two Oscars for documentaries denouncing violence against women.  
  • Obaid-Chinoy directed last year’s Ms. Marvel television series, featuring a Muslim superhero.
