German artist Boris Eldagsen turned down an international photography award after revealing that he used AI to produce the winning image.

Eldagsen said the photography community needs to have "an open discussion" about "what we want to consider photography."

  • He won the open creative award at the Sony world photography awards last week.
  • The black-and-white image shows two women of different generations in an embrace.
  • Eldagsen said he rejected the award because "AI images and photography should not compete with each other... They are different entities. AI is not photography."
  • Before being declared the winner, he told World Photography Organization, which hosts the Sony awards, that he had used AI to create the image.
  • The organization plans to post a Q&A with Eldagsen to kickstart "a more in-depth discussion on this topic."
