Israeli strikes hit multiple targets in Lebanon and Gaza on Friday in response to an unusually large barrage of rockets fired from Lebanon.

The military exchanges are believed to constitute the most extreme violence on Israel's border with Lebanon since the deadly 2006 Lebanon War

  • Israeli authorities report that 25 rockets fired from Lebanon were intercepted by its air defense while six landed in Israeli territory.
  • Israel believes the rocket attacks from Lebanon and Gaza were orchestrated by Palestinian militant group Hamas, charges which Hamas denies.
  • Israel responded to the barrage by hitting infrastructure belonging to Hamas in southern Lebanon and Gaza.
  • More rockets were fired from Gaza following Israel's air strikes.
  • The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) warned Lebanon that it holds the country responsible for "every directed fire emanating from its territory."
  • Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was in Lebanon when the rocket attacks from the country took place.

  • Tensions in the region remain heightened following recent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
