What the numbers say: The majority of Japanese podcast listeners preferred listening to news-related podcasts in 2022. News garnered 33.4% of the vote, and comedy came in second with 30.4% of the vote. Music commentary checked in above 20%, getting 22.5%, while business (18.3%), TV Shows & Movies (16.5%), Learning English (16.2%), Sports (14.4%), and Society/Culture (14.1%) rounded out the top eight answers.
Relevance: Otonal revealed the results of its survey with The Asahi Shimbun Company titled "PODCAST REPORT IN JAPAN Survey of Podcast Usage in Japan (2022)." The companies conducted a survey with 600 respondents which highlighted the listening preferences of Japanese podcast listeners for the previous year, including preferred genres, the most common time they listen, how frequently they listen to podcasts, and more.
Other interesting data: Of the 600 respondents, 63.7% of them never listen to podcasts. Only 15.7% of the responses were from people who listen to a podcast at least once a month. 57.8% of podcast listeners were male, and 56.8% of listeners were between the ages of 15 and 29.
