 According to the Global Electricity Review report by energy think tank Ember, solar power generation increased by 24% last year and wind power rose by 17%.

  • The report analyzed global electricity data from 78 countries accounting for 93% of global electricity demand.
  • It found that solar and wind energy account for more than 10% of electricity in 60+ countries.
  • However, the report found that carbon emissions from electricity generation reached an all-time high in 2022 after increasing by 1.3% from a year earlier.
  • Coal power generation reached a new record high in 2022 after increasing by 1.1% from a year earlier.
  • The EU aims to boost solar and wind to 45% of total electricity generation by 2030, up from 22% at present.
  • The U.S. aims to decarbonize its power sector by 2035. Wind and solar currently account for 15% of the electricity produced in the country.
