Republican governors in Indiana and Idaho signed laws banning gender-affirming care for minors this week.
At least 30 states have passed or are considering laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for trans youth.
- The
Indiana law prohibits transgender minors from receiving medication or
surgeries and mandates that minors who are currently taking medication
must stop by the end of the year.
- Under the law, doctors who offer gender-affirming care to minors could be disciplined by a state licensing board.
- The Idaho law would make it a felony crime to provide minors with hormones, puberty blockers, and other gender-affirming care.
- On Wednesday, the Republican-led Kansas Legislature overrode
Democratic Governor Laura Kelly's veto of a bill banning transgender
athletes from girls' and women's sports at all schools — from
kindergartens to universities.
- The GOP-led Arkansas Senate sent
a bill to Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders that would require
parental approval for teachers to address students with their preferred
names and pronouns.
- Research shows that access to gender-affirming care can improve the mental health and well-being of transgender and non-binary minors.
