Snapchat is making changes to its OpenAI-powered AI chatbot after reports cited its potential for misuse, particularly for younger users.
Snap says its My AI bot
will now take a user's birthdate into account during interactions,
preventing the chatbot from resoonding inappropriately to younger users.
- The bot can now adjust its responses based on a user's age.
- Snapchat's parent company is also adding OpenAI moderation technologies to help gauge if content in chats is harmful.
- Users found to be misusing the service will see their access to Snapchat temporarily restricted.
- In
addition, Snap is adding My AI conversation history data to Family
Center tracking, allowing parents to view when and how often their
children are conversing with the bot.
- The experimental "My AI" feature, which is only open to Snapchat+ subscribers, is described as a more restricted and mobile version of ChatGPT.
- Shortly after launching the bot in late February, The Washington Post
found that it made inappropriate comments, including giving advice
about alcohol and marijuana to a journalist posing as a 15-year-old.
