Toymaker Mattel has launched a Barbie doll with Down syndrome.
The National Down Syndrome Society said the toy will allow members of the Down syndrome community to "play with a Barbie doll that looks like them."
The blue and yellow flowers and butterflies on the doll's dress reflect colors and symbols commonly associated with Down syndrome awareness.
- The doll's necklace features three chevrons to symbolize the three copies of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome have.
- The doll wears ankle foot orthotics, which some children with Down syndrome use.
The doll is part of Mattel's 2023 Fashionista line, which aims to celebrate diverse identities and appearances.
- The line includes a Ken doll with a prosthetic leg, a Barbie with hearing aids, and figurines with vitiligo, a skin condition.
