Apple restricts employee use of ChatGPT

Apple has restricted employees from using external AI tools, such as ChatGPT, over concerns about the leakage of confidential data.

The ban on outside generative AI usage follows similar restrictions by Samsung, JPMorgan, Bank of America, and others.

  • According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, ChatGPT has been on Apple's list of restricted software "for months."
  • Apple's restriction also applies to Copilot, GitHub's AI programming assistant, and other AI tools.
  • OpenAI retains and reviews user interactions with ChatGPT as part of its default practice.
  • Conversations are used to train its AI systems and are subject to moderation, meaning whatever users type into the chat box is not confidential.
  • The news comes a day after OpenAI launched an iOS app for ChatGPT, its first official mobile app. The app is currently accessible in the US, supports voice input, and is free to use.
  • Meanwhile, Apple is hiring for more AI roles as it seeks to incorporate more generative AI into its offerings.
  • According to 9to5Mac, Apple posted 28 AI-focused jobs during the first three weeks of May, with a high number of the positions specifically citing "generative AI.
