Blizzard creates game image generator

Game studio Blizzard Entertainment has developed an internal AI tool that generates images and concept art for new video games.

Allen Adham, Blizzard's chief design officer, informed employees about the tool in a recent email that was obtained by the New York Times.

  • The tool is reportedly named Blizzard Diffusion, after the well-known text-to-image generator Stable Diffusion.
  • "Prepare to be amazed," Adham wrote, according to The Times. "We are on the brink of a major evolution in how we build and manage our games."
  • Blizzard's generator was apparently trained on the company's IP, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch.
  • Gaming studios have argued that AI technology could cut out tedious design and development tasks, though developers are concerned it could replace jobs.
  • The reveal comes after Blizzard applied for a patent for AI technology to generate artwork for video games.
  • The AI system would generate game graphics in specific art styles by emulating pre-existing images, potentially saving time in the creation of sprawling virtual worlds.
