China warns over AI risks

China's Communist Party, including President Xi Jinping, has reportedly called for increased national security measures in light of AI's advancements and other issues. On Tuesday, Xi and other party members prioritized China's leadership in advanced technologies while emphasizing political security and better governance of AI and online data.

  • Local news outlet Xinhua News Agency reported that leaders discussed "dedicated efforts to safeguard political security and improve the security governance of internet data and artificial intelligence."
  • They urged accelerated efforts to create a system for monitoring risks and providing early warnings.
  • According to Xinhua, Xi said that China's national security problems have "increased dramatically," and the country requires a "new pattern of development with a new security architecture."
  • Leaders reportedly highlighted the need to prepare for "worst-case scenarios."
  • China has previously taken steps to regulate AI, such as proposing a draft law requiring government-mandated security reviews for new generative AI services.
  • Baidu, Alibaba, and SenseTime all announced their own advanced AI chatbots this year, putting pressure on Beijing to govern generative AI without stifling innovation.
