Eating fried foods, including fries

Eating fried foods, including fries, regularly may  increase the risk  of anxiety and depression, according to a study published in PNAS scientific journal.

The  study  analyzed data from over 140,000 participants over 11 years and found that frequent fried foods, particularly fried potatoes, were associated with a 12% higher risk of anxiety and a 7% higher risk of depression.

  • The association between fried foods and mental health issues was stronger in males and younger individuals.
  • Acrylamide, a substance formed during high-temperature cooking, was pointed out as a potential cause of the association between fried foods and depression/anxiety.
  • Fried foods are often high in calories and saturated fats, and their frequent consumption can contribute to obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
