Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested outside of the High Court in Islamabad on Tuesday.
Khan was appearing before the court on corruption charges when he was arrested and detained by dozens of paramilitary forces inside the court compound.
- Previous attempts by Pakistani law enforcement to arrest Khan at his Lahore estate were thwarted by his supporters.
- On Monday, Pakistan's military issued a public rebuke of Khan for alleging that a senior military official was behind an assassination attempt against him.
- Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party called on its supporters to stage protests against the arrest of its leader.
- Violence was reported in several Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar, in the hours that followed his arrest.
- Hundreds of pro-Khan protesters blocked a major highway in Islamabad.
- Khan, a former Pakistan cricket star, was elected prime minister in 2018.
- He was removed from office in April 2022 after a successful vote of no confidence in Pakistan's parliament and has been a vocal critic of the new Pakistani government since his ouster.
- In October, Pakistan's election committee barred Khan from holding public office for five years again on the grounds that he failed to declare gifts given by foreign dignitaries and money generated from the sale of these gifts.
