The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) aims to boost vehicle safety by changing radar regulations.

The agency voted on Thursday to increase the use of higher-powered short-range radar to gather information from cars and drones.

  • The FCC decision is intended to support several technologies that increase vehicle safety.
  • Sensor systems that detect people in the back seat of cars are among the technologies the legislation supports.
  • The sensors form part of an effort among U.S. automakers to reduce deaths caused by children being left in hot cars.
  • The high-powered radar operations authorized by the FCC will also support systems that issue warnings when vehicles depart from their lanes.
