The U.S. Justice Department has accused a former Apple engineer of stealing the company's self-driving car technology.

The engineer, Weibao Wang, allegedly stole Apple's autonomous tech and shared it with a Chinese self-driving car company.

  • Wang, who had access to restricted Apple databases, allegedly stole sensitive technology and source code from the company to share with a Chinese self-driving startup owned by Baidu.
  • Wang took a job offer from the Chinese company in 2017 while he was still a software engineer at Apple.
  • In June 2018, law enforcement searched Wang's home in California and found the stolen data, but he managed to escape the country.
  • Now in China, Wang faces six charges related to stealing Apple's autonomy source code, tracking systems, behavior planning for autonomous systems, and hardware descriptions.
  • If extradited and convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison per count.
