U.K. probing AI market

The U.K.'s competition regulator is launching a probe into the AI market, including foundation models such as the software underpinning ChatGPT.

The review by the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will examine the market surrounding these models and how they're developing, according to chief executive Sarah Cardell.

  • According to Cardell, the CMA will investigate "the actual opportunities there" and establish "guardrails and principles" to ensure that competition works effectively and consumers are safeguarded in the AI space.
  • The CEO said the agency's probe of AI would be a "fact-finding" endeavor that will include many businesses, academics, and others.
  • Additionally, Cardell said the review would not single out any specific companies.
  • Meanwhile, regulators worldwide have been increasing their scrutiny of generative AI following last year's release of ChatGPT.
  • Last week, EU lawmakers agreed on an early draft of its AI Act, which includes a requirement for generative AI companies to disclose any copyrighted material used to train their systems.
  • The draft law is now advancing to the final stage, the "trilogue," which involves negotiating the bill's final details.
  • Once finalized, the law would have a grace period of around two years for parties to adhere to the new rules.
