VP Harris to meet with AI executives




Top Biden officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, are set to meet with top tech executives, including Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, to discuss the future of AI.

For Thursday's meeting, administration officials have asked for "a frank discussion" of AI's risks and how to mitigate those risks, as well as ways to work together to make sure people benefit from AI but are also protected from its harms.

Other executives planning to attend include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

  • Harris and Raimondo will be joined by Biden's chief of staff, Jeff Zients, Office of Science and Technology Policy director Arati Prabhakar, domestic policy adviser Susan Rice, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, and others .
  • A White House official said administration officials plan to communicate that the companies bear a responsibility to reduce the potential harm caused by AI.
  • Harris plans to "emphasize the importance of driving responsible, trustworthy, and ethical innovation with safeguards that mitigate risks and potential harms," the person said.
  • The meeting is part of broader plans by the administration to engage with different industries and stakeholders about AI.
