What the numbers say: The Oculus Quest app store had 414 apps as of October 2022. However, the Oculus App Lab, launched in February 2021, now offers 1,457 VR headset-compatible
apps. In just 20 months, App Lab's app count has tripled the main Quest store's app count. Meta's PC applications count is around 1,350 apps, while SteamVR applications count is around 4,500.
Relevance: The Steam catalog has 3,870 VR-only games and 4,571 games that support VR. Among Steam users who own VR headsets, 52.28% use a Meta's Oculus headset version. The popularity of Steam among gamers and its integration with VR through SteamVR provides an opportunity for developers to create more VR games and experiences for a wider audience. Steam survey data suggests that only 2.3% of users have VR headsets.
Where to see the impact: The Steam platform, launched in 2003, now has over 120 million monthly active users and a catalog of over 50,000 games. According to the most recent annual survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference, the PC remains by far the most popular platform among game developers, followed by the PlayStation 5 consoles. The most interesting platform for developers is still the mobile VR headset Meta Quest 2, followed by Sony's Playstation VR 2.
