Apple is enhancing the iPhone's auto-correct feature with advanced AI capabilities. Announced during today's WWDC, the upgraded auto-correct will use powerful AI to more accurately predict the words and phrases users are most likely to write next. The feature will learn from users' frequently-used words, including profanity, to personalize auto-correct over time. - It's powered by a transformer language model, which will also improve the accuracy of speech typing.
- The upgrade is being introduced in iOS 17, the next version of the iPhone's operating system, which is expected to have its first public release in July, followed by a full release in September.
While the focus was on Apple's $3,500 mixed-reality headset, the company made some other AI-related announcements at WWDC. - These include new live transcriptions of voicemails and a new Journal app, which uses on-device machine learning, for iOS 17.
- Specifically, the diary/journaling app will use AI to offer personalized suggestions and prompts to iPhone users based on their location, podcasts, music, workouts, and more.
