What the data says: Women are almost twice as likely to listen to true crime podcasts than men. 44% of U.S. women listen to true crime podcasts regularly, while only 23% of men do. Out of the 34% of respondents who say they listen to true crime podcasts, 45% of them have a lower education, equaling a high school diploma or less. A third of listeners have some college education, and 27% have at least a bachelor's degree.

Relevance: Pew Research Center released findings of a podcast listener preference survey and found that true crime is one of the most popular podcast genres. Among top-ranked podcasts, defined as those with the highest average daily rankings on Apple's and Spotify's lists of top podcasts in a six-month period in 2022, it was discovered that true crime was the most common topic. Almost 24% of top podcasts covered true crime.

More data: Young listeners are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts. 41% of listeners ages 18 to 29 said they listen to true crime podcasts, while only 15% of listeners ages 65+ replied in the affirmative.
