DGA reaches deal

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) reached a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on a new three-year film and TV contract.

In 2008, the DGA negotiated a deal that helped to resolve an ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike; the same situation seems unlikely to repeat itself this time.

The new DGA deal includes wage increases, a new structure for residuals earned on foreign networks and streaming services, and restrictions on the use of AI.

  • The deal does not impact residuals earned on streaming platforms, as many suspected it might; directors will still earn flat rates for streaming programs, regardless of viewership.
  • DGA negotiating committee chair Jon Avnet called it "a truly historic deal" providing "significant improvements for every director, assistant director, unit production manager, associate director and stage manager in our guild."
  • The DGA had not requested a strike authorization vote from members; the guild has never gone on an extended strike, and has only ever staged a single walkout in 1987 that lasted around 5 minutes.
