Indian streaming platform JioCinema drew over 32 million simultaneous viewers to an Indian Premier League cricket tournament on Monday, setting a new world record.

The previous record of around 25.3 million simultaneous viewers was held by a 2019 cricket tournament, which streamed on Disney's Hotstar platform.

  • The new record-setting match featured the Chennai Super Kings facing off against the Gujarat Titans.
  • Viacom18 -- a joint venture involving Paramount Global and James Murdoch's Bodhi Tree Systems -- secured the streaming rights for Indian Premier League cricket in a $2.6 billion deal in 2022; Disney held on to the exclusive TV rights.
  • JioCinema recently signed a new multi-year partnership with NBCUniversal to stream thousands of hours of American films and TV shows in India, including "The Office."
