Microsoft could invest billions in CoreWeave

According to CNBC, Microsoft is prepared to potentially invest billions of dollars in cloud computing infrastructure provided by CoreWeave, a startup specializing in simplified access to Nvidia's high-performance GPUs.

To bolster its computing capabilities, Microsoft could make a substantial investment in CoreWeave over multiple years, sources told CNBC.

Nvidia-backed CoreWeave specializes in cloud computing services based on GPUs, which are used for AI training.

  • According to CNBC, Microsoft's deal with CoreWeave, signed earlier this year, aims to ensure that OpenAI's ChatGPT has enough computing power.
  • OpenAI relies on Microsoft's Azure cloud infrastructure to meet its computational requirements.
  • Both Microsoft and CoreWeave chose not to comment.

CoreWeave recently secured $200M in funding from hedge fund Magnetar Capital, following its valuation of $2B just over a month ago, according to CNBC sources.

  • The funding was an extension of a $221M round announced in April.
