What the numbers say: Comedy is the most popular genre of podcasts and has been for quite some time. According to Edison Podcast Metrics, U.S. podcast listeners ages 13 and up have rated comedy as the top genre that they listen to for the past two years. Previous data from year past, according to Statista, show comedy has been the top choice even before 2021, with it claiming top spots in 2020 as well. Relevance: The podcast genre rankings for Q1 2023 were released, and 19 different genres received at least 1% reach amongst U.S. listeners ages 13 and up. The top five have remained the same for most of the past year, with just a slight tweak in Q3 2022, as Society & Culture overtook News for second place and News dropped down to third. But True Crime has stayed in fourth, and Sports has remained in fifth for over a year. Other rankings: The other podcast genre rankings from spots six through 12 have varied over this time frame. Business has mostly been in sixth place, but after that, Arts, Education, Health & Fitness, History, TV & Film, and Religion & Spirituality have jockeyed for positioning between 6-12. |
