NYC delays short-term rental rules

Gothamist reported New York City is delaying the implementation of its short-term rental rules for companies like Airbnb.

Last week, Airbnb filed a lawsuit against the city's Office of Special Enforcement over the new law.

The new regulations required hosts to register with a database, prove they reside in the property, submit diagrams, and prove their homes abide by local zoning and safety requirements.

  • It prohibited hosts from renting their homes during vacations and installing locks on guest bedrooms.
  • Violating hosts could face fines of up to $1,500 per violation.
  • In the lawsuit filed last week, Airbnb called it a defacto ban that would limit the number of hosts in the city.
  • NYC initially pushed implementation from May to July and has postponed it to Sept. 5.
