OpenAI's COO, Brad Lightcap

OpenAI's COO, Brad Lightcap, acknowledged that while AI technology may create new job opportunities, it will also eliminate some existing ones.

Speaking at a WSJ event in France today, Lightcap stressed the need for humans to guide AI models, assigning tasks and ensuring their accuracy.

Lightcap specifically mentioned jobs related to contract review for revenue recognition, stating that such positions may not exist in the future.

  • According to Lightcap, companies using AI to double their computer code output will need additional employees for tasks like product design, distribution, operations, and sales and marketing.
  • Meanwhile, he said workers can become more productive by delegating mundane tasks to AI, leading to a noticeable boost in productivity.

AI has already begun replacing some human jobs, with nearly 4,000 positions lost in May due to the technology, per a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

  • According to the report, U.S. employers had over 80,000 layoffs in May, a 20% jump from April. AI was responsible for around 5% of those job cuts, making it the seventh-highest contributor.
