Sheridan on Costner

In a wide-ranging and controversial discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan opened up about Kevin Costner's decision to exit the franchise, along with his thoughts on the writers' strike and more.

Sheridan told THR that he's "disappointed" by Costner's abrupt exit from the Western drama series, adding "it truncates the closure of his character. It doesn't alter it, but it truncates it."

Costner, who stars on "Yellowstone" as rancher and politician John Dutton, has opted to focus on his four-movie Western project "Horizon."

  • The series will end following the second half of its fifth season, scheduled to air on cable later this year; Sheridan has a spinoff project in the works with Matthew McConaughey.
  • Sheridan also discussed his preference for working alone; though he said specific negotiations on writers rooms were "between the studio and the guild," he noted that he would likely exit the TV industry if he were forced to collaborate with other writers.
  • Sheridan also took some heat on social media for a quote in which he seemed to claim credit for the passage of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, overlooking decades of advocacy by Indigenous women.
