A New Yorker story published ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike included a number of comments from veterans of Netflix's "Orange is the New Black," claiming they were never fairly compensated for participating in the breakout hit series. "OITNB" -- from "Weeds" veteran Jenji Kohan -- was one of the first Netflix original hits when it premiered 10 years ago this week, solidifying the streamer's new role as a content producer. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos posted a commemoration of the show's 10th anniversary to his Instagram this week. - 10 recurring "OITNB" cast members -- including Kimiko Glenn, Beth Dover, Emmy Myles, Diane Guerrero, and Taryn Manning -- spoke with New Yorker writer Michael Schulman for the piece.
- The cast members were initially compensated SAG's minimum day rate -- under $1000 an episode -- to join the series.
- Myles claims that she's earned around $20 in residuals from the show in 2023; in a TikTok posted earlier this year, Glenn claims she's earned $27.30 in overseas royalties.
- Co-star Matt McGorry has also suggested that he lost money by appearing in the show, as he was considered a "local hire" and had to fund his own travel to and from the set.
