AI-assisted music can qualify for Grammy Awards if there is a meaningful human contribution, says Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr.
"What's not going to happen is we are not going to give a Grammy or Grammy nomination to the AI portion," he clarified to the Associated Press.
The Recording Academy, which presents the Grammys, recently updated its rulebook to specify that only human creators are eligible for the awards.
- While AI-assisted songs can be considered for awards, fully AI-generated tracks are disqualified.
- According to Mason, a "meaningful" human contribution is required for Grammy nominations and wins, and technology should enhance human creativity rather than replace it.
- While it's uncertain whether AI-created music will receive nominations next year, the Academy expects that some submissions will incorporate AI technology.
- The 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled for Feb. 4, 2024.
