BMW has launched a new VR platform, MetaRide, in the metaverse, allowing users to experience their new motorcycles virtually.

The platform debuted with the BMW CE 02 electric scooter, offering a 3D view and a virtual test ride of the vehicle.

MetaRide is accessible via the Spatial Metaverse platform, where users can also engage in other activities like playing basketball and collecting tokens.

  • Meta's metaverse, launched in 2021, was initially seen as the future of human society, offering a way to experience things without physical presence.
  • However, the metaverse has lost momentum and is no longer the primary focus of Meta, which owns Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram.
  • Reality Labs, the company that builds the hardware required to access the metaverse, made an operating loss of $13.7B in 2022.
  • BMW's MetaRide seems to target young people, offering them a chance to experience the excitement of a motorcycle without actually riding it.

BMW has recently created a digital version of its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) facility in Hungary, exploiting the value of the metaverse for large manufacturing projects.
