G/O Media, the company behind websites like Deadspin, Gizmodo, and The A.V. Club, is using AI to create news content.

Already, an AI-generated story on Gizmodo's io9 has faced criticism for factual inaccuracies, omissions, and an incorrect chronology of Star Wars films and TV shows.

The AI experiment sparked controversy as the article, titled "A Chronological List of Star Wars Movies & TV Shows," appeared under the byline "Gizmodo Bot," surprising the site's editorial staff with no input or advance notice.

  • James Whitbrook, a deputy editor at io9, expressed disappointment and sent a statement with a list of corrections to G/O Media.
  • According to an internal memo viewed by Adweek, the company plans to do a limited trial using AI to generate a small number of stories for publications including Gizmodo, The Takeout, and Deadspin.
  • GMG Union, the Gizmodo union, called the decision unethical and urged readers to avoid clicking on articles with "Bot" bylines.
