GOOD NEWS: A community garden that was planted on the site of a shuttered coal mine in Texas is helping to feed thousands of local people. The 1-acre garden has produced more than 10,000 pounds of produce since April 2022. The community garden, which is located in Freestone County, is part of a broader effort to restore a 35,000-acre lignite coal mine that closed in 2016. - The garden is managed by Texan by Nature, a non-profit that was established by former First Lady Laura Bush.
- Texan by Nature has set aside nine acres on the site to expand the garden.
- Joe Harris, who worked for the company that owns the mine for three decades, said he supports the restoration efforts.
- He told the Texas Tribune:
- "We want it to look like it was never mined before so when I bring my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I can say, 'Look, there was once a mine here.'"
