Roughly 160,000 actors and performers who are members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) union went on strike on Friday.

SAG and other unions are demanding that streaming platforms pay a larger share of their earnings to the actors, writers, and other creatives who help to make television shows.

The official SAG walkout began at 8 AM PST.

  • SAG actors are joining Hollywood writers who have been on strike since early May.
    • It is set to be the first time that Hollywood actors and writers go on strike simultaneously since 1960.
  • Striking actors are expected to begin picketing Netflix's California headquarters before moving to the headquarters of Paramount, Warner Bros, and Disney.
  • Actors Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt left the premiere of Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" in London on Thursday night to show solidarity for the strike.
  • SAG President Fran Drescher - who is best known for her role in the 90s sitcom The Nanny - said that over 90% of SAG members voted to go on strike.
    • The union is preparing for the strike to run for as long as six months, Drescher said.
