In a Bloomberg Television interview, Kathleen McCarthy said the current distress in the commercial real estate sector is creating opportunities for well-capitalized investors.

McCarthy is the co-head of global real estate at Blackstone.

High vacancy and interest rates in the U.S. and Europe have caused a harsh sell-off in publicly traded real estate stocks and bonds. However, its full impact is yet to be seen.

  • McCarthy added that Blackstone invested €3.5B ($3.8B) to date this year, majorly focusing on properties with the potential for rent to increase and compensate for higher borrowing costs.
    • These types of properties include warehouses, student housing, and lab spaces.
  • She emphasized that Blackstone leverages extensive data to help make transaction decisions.
