Mark Lucovsky, the former head of operating systems at Google's AR team, has departed, citing "unstable commitment and vision" toward the company's AR initiatives.

This follows recent setbacks for Google's AR endeavors, including layoffs, leadership changes, and discontinuation of projects like Project Iris and Google Glass' enterprise edition.

Google's AR team has faced several challenges in recent months, including layoffs and the resignation of the former head of VR, Clay Bavor.

  • In June, an Insider report revealed Google's decision to abandon its AR glasses project, Project Iris.
  • Lucovsky, who previously worked at Facebook for four years as the general manager of Oculus VR, joined Google in 2021 to lead its AR OS team.
  • Google, reportedly pivoting from AR hardware, is now focusing on software development for AR products.

Per a 2022 report, the global AR market is projected to reach $72B by 2024.

  • In May, Google confirmed it worked on an Android XR platform for Samsung's AR headset.
