Sudan is on the brink of a full-scale civil war, with ongoing clashes between rival generals leading to significant casualties and displacement.

The conflict has been escalating for nearly three months and threatens to destabilize the entire region.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the war between the Sudanese military and a powerful paramilitary force could destabilize the entire region.

  • The tension between the military chief and the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into open fighting in mid-April.
  • Over 3,000 people have been killed, and over 6,000 others wounded due to the clashes. The actual death toll is likely much higher.
  • More than 2.9 million people have fled their homes to safer areas inside Sudan or crossed into neighboring countries.
  • The conflict began 18 months after a military coup in October 2021 that toppled a Western-backed civilian transition government.
  • The war has turned the capital Khartoum and other urban areas across the country into battlefields.

Egypt says it will host a summit of Sudan's neighbors on July 13 to discuss ways to end a 12-week conflict between rival Sudanese military factions.

  • Sudan's health ministry on Saturday said a strike by fighter jets in Omdurman, part of Sudan's wider capital region, left 22 people dead.
