The Associated Press (AP) has entered into a partnership with OpenAI to explore how it can use generative AI to help deliver the news.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, will be given access to some AP news articles dating back to 1985 to help train its large language models (LLMs).

The AP said it does not currently use generative AI in its news stories, but the news agency has been experimenting with automation and AI since at least 2014.

  • The AP first began using automation to analyze corporate earnings reports.
    • It has since incorporated automation to assist in covering local sporting events.
  • The news agency will be given access to OpenAI's technology and expertise as part of the two-year partnership.

Kristin Heitmann, AP senior vice president and chief revenue officer, said the AP wants to ensure that "intellectual property is protected and content creators are fairly compensated for their work."
