ChatGPT creator OpenAI has introduced a web-based tool that it says can distinguish between AI and human-written texts.

The AI Text Classifier is free for users with an OpenAI account.

  • To utilize the tool, users paste in text, and the AI program will label it as "very unlikely," "unlikely," "possibly," or "likely" that the words were created using AI.
  • It also has a fifth category saying it's "unclear if the text is" AI-generated.
  • The tool, described as "a fine-tuned GPT model," also requires at least 1,000 characters, or 150 to 250 words, to work.
  • According to OpenAI, the classifier was able to identify around 26% of content as "likely AI-written" in tests, making it not especially accurate.
  • It also incorrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time.
  • OpenAI acknowledged the tool's limitations, saying that it can be used for now to complement other ways to determine if text is from an AI generator.
