DeepMind Technologies, Alphabet's London-based AI lab, is closing its office in Edmonton, Alberta, and will cut some positions in the U.K.

The Edmonton office is the only DeepMind location that was directly managed by the AI company, while other DeepMind offices are inside Google-managed buildings.

More:

  • Some of the affected staff will be offered positions at other Deepmind offices, such as those in Montreal and Toronto, which are housed at Google locations.
  • It's unclear how many staff will be let go in Canada and the U.K.
  • The downsizing comes less than a week after Google parent Alphabet announced layoffs affecting approximately 12,000 employees.
  • Alphabet, then Google, acquired DeepMind in 2014, four years after the AI lab was founded. DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman sold DeepMind to Google for ~$600M.
