107 early-stage unicorns minted in 2022

In 2022, 107 new early-stage startups cemented their status as unicorns, exceeding valuations of over $1B.

The slowdown in venture funding deployment caused the percentage of newly minted unicorns to drop by 28% compared to 2021. Despite the drop, the numbers remained higher than in any year barring 2021.

  • In total, 300 unicorns were minted across all stages last year, of which 22 were added in Q4 2022.
  • 77 of the total unicorns minted were post-early-stage companies.
  • Notable startups that reached unicorn valuations in the second half of 2022 were Web3 infrastructure firm Aptos Lab, which hit a $4B valuation; blockchain developer Mysten Labs, which reached a $2B valuation at its $300M Series B round; and AI startup Jasper, which raised $125M Series A at a $1.5B valuation.
  • Global venture funding deployment slowed by 35% from $681B in 2021 to $445B in 2022.
