According to a poll, half of Americans believe that national news organizations aim to mislead viewers and readers.
The poll conducted by Gallup and the Knight Foundation indicates that people increasingly distrust mainstream media.
- 50% of those polled disagreed with the notion that national news organizations do not intend to mislead, versus 25% who said they agreed.
- 52% disagreed with the claim that national media outlets "care about the best interests of their readers, viewers, and listeners," compared to just 23% who agreed.
- 61% of respondents said that smartphones, social media, the 24-hour news cycle, and the proliferation of news sources actually make it harder to stay informed.
- 55% believe there is a great deal of political bias in news coverage, a 10-point increase from 2017.
- The poll surveyed 5,593 Americans 18 years of age and older between May 31 and July 21, 2022.
