African wildlife is resurging in Uganda.

Decades-long conservation efforts have boosted populations of elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes in the country, reports YaleEnvironment360.

  • Political upheaval and poaching led to a decline in Ugandan wildlife from the 1960s to the 1980s.
  • Uganda's government introduced policies to conserve wildlife after hunting completely wiped out the country's populations of northern white and eastern black rhinos in the 1980s.
  • Uganda now has 32 black rhinos after four rhinos were reintroduced to the country in 2005.
  • The country had 44,163 buffaloes in 2021, a 77% increase since 1983.
  • Uganda's elephant population has soared by almost 300% over the same period, reaching 7,975.
