Amazon said it won't build storm shelters after lawmakers asked the company to have more thorough emergency measures in case of a building collapse.

In 2021, a tornado damaged an Amazon warehouse in Illinois, killing six workers.

  • Amazon said it already follows all applicable laws and building codes.
    • According to Brian Huseman, Amazon's vice president of public policy, "we have not identified any jurisdiction in the United States that requires storm shelters or safe rooms for these types of facilities."
  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration does not require companies to specifically build storm shelters in warehouses. Yet Members of Congress are questioning why the retailer did not have a storm shelter in the Illinois warehouse.
    • The families of two of the killed employees filed wrongful death lawsuits against Amazon.
