An Iowa teenager jumped into an icy lake on Saturday to save an 83-year-old man and his dog.

17-year-old Joe Salmon managed to pull Thomas Lee and his dog Cooper to safety with the help of four passersby.

  • Lee's jeep fell through the ice of East Okoboji Lake in Dickinson County, Iowa, on Saturday, trapping him and his dog.
  • Lee was reportedly traveling to his son-in-law's fishing shack when the accident occurred.
  • Salmon, who was fishing nearby, leaped into the lake to rescue Lee after dialing 911.
  • The teenager broke the rear window to rescue Cooper from the back of the jeep and returned to help Lee free his foot, which had gotten stuck in the car.
  • Four other people helped Salmon pull Lee to safety.
  • "I want to thank the people who helped and the store that took the dog in and dried him off," Lee told the De Moines Register.
