Andrej Karpathy, Tesla's former senior AI director, is now rejoining AI research company OpenAI, where he previously served as a research scientist and a founding member.
Karpathy left Tesla last year after leading the computer vision team for Autopilot, its driver-assistance technology.
- It was unclear what role Karpathy will take at OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT and DALL-E.
- In announcing his exit from Tesla in July, Kartpathy said he intended to focus on his "long-term passions around technical work in AI, open source, and education."
- In October, he said he would be "interested" in one day returning to Tesla.
- However, he tweeted on Wednesday that he is joining OpenAI again and is "inspired by the impact of their work," adding that he "personally benefited greatly from it."
